Professors for a Strong Israel

Statement to the Press - 3 July 2007

Re: A lesson from the Japanese

The Japanese defense minister was caught in an unfortunate gaffe, saying that dropping the atomic bombs on Japan may have been the only way to bring World War II to an end. Even though there are those who would agree with him, such a statement is unacceptable in Japan, and in the ensuing scandal he was censured and forced to resign.

Here, on the other hand, the Prime Minister of Kadima refuses to resign. We're not dealing with some embarrassing statement by the Prime Minister, but with incompetence that has led to death, destruction, and the loss of deterrent power by the nation's defense forces. Olmert hasn't even accepted responsibility for the failed war and for abandoning the residents of the North and the South to their fates; his indifference has blossomed into impenetrable isolation, as he refuses to attend the memorial held for the soldiers he sent to their deaths.

Professors for a Strong Israel demands that Olmert take a lesson from the Japanese and resign at once. General elections, held as soon as possible, are the only way to begin reconstruction.
