Professors for a Strong Israel

Statement to the Press - 3 November 2003

Re: For a healthy economy (II)

Professors for a Strong Israel supports the efforts of the Finance Minister to reconstruct Israel's economy and to put it on the road of freedom and growth. We support the courageous measures he is taking to rescue the pension funds after years of unprofessional management (to put it mildly) that have brought them to their precarious state.

We reject the irresponsible behavior of the Histadrut, its attack on the economy in time of war, and its resistance to the pension fund plan that will ensure the future of the retirees.

We call on the government and on the law enforcement system to act aggressively against lawbreakers among the strikers. They must show the same zeal they displayed against the demonstrators of Zo Artzenu years ago. The Histadrut's wildcat strike is already causing far more damage than Zo Artzenu's peaceful demonstrations, and the motive here is not to save the country from destruction but to save the inflated incomes of the strongest sectors in the economy. These people are willing to prevent the recovery of the economy in order to safeguard their positions of power and wealth.
