Professors for a Strong Israel

Statement to the Press - 5 January 2003

Re: There ain't no such thing as free loan guarantees

Professors for a Strong Israel cautions the Prime Minister against entering the quicksand of American loan guarantees. The guarantees will furnish a lever by which the American State Department will hamstring Israeli policy and force the government to act against the nation's interests. It doesn't take a long memory to recall the role of American loan guarantees in bringing down the Shamir government and in promoting the creation of the Oslo disaster. It is already clear that the price of the new guarantees will include giving land and resources to our enemies even as they continue to kill our citizens.

The cure for the ills of the nation's economy will not come from injections of American cash. First and foremost, the government must act decisively to restore normal peacetime economic activity. The key is to end the Oslo War by winning it. At the same time, the government should adopt a consistent economic recovery plan. We can exploit our strengths instead of placing a foreign yoke around our necks. This requires courageous leadership and stubborn resistance to the foreign intervention inherent in the "road map."
