Professors for a Strong Israel

Statement to the Press - 5 September 2004

Re: PSI meets the President in the matter of "disengagement"

A joint delegation from Professors for a Strong Israel and of senior reserve officers met the President today and communicated to him the reasons - military, legal, and other - for our opposition to the disengagement plan. Members of the delegation took the position that carrying out the disengagement would be antidemocratic, immoral, and contrary to the Basic Law: Human Dignity and Freedom. The delegation requested of the President that he exert all his moral influence to prevent a schism in the army and the nation.

In his response the President said that the Knesset’s decisions must be accepted democratically, in a way that will not exacerbate divisions in the nation. The President also said that there might be a need for a national referendum.
