Professors for a Strong Israel

Statement to the Press - 6 September 2001

Re: From Oslo to Durban

Two figures stood out at the World Conference Against (sic) Racism in Durban. Both came to Durban all the way from Oslo (also known as Munich). One, who was indeed there, is Yasser Arafat; the other, who was absent, is Shimon Peres. Frankenstein's monster is alive and well: Facing oblivion on the eve of Oslo, Arafat is now a media superstar, though still nothing but a cruel terrorist. Peres, on the other hand, has fallen to zero credit and zero credibility, courting Arafat and begging to be received by him, offering in return blood and blood money. Peres' behavior is especially pathetic when placed in the context of Arafat's terrorism and incitement to violence.

The weakness of Israel's leaders gave birth to Oslo, whence the path led ever downwards towards the Oslo War and the defendant's box in Durban. Internal anti-Semitism, the self-loathing of the Left, gave encouragement to its external counterpart. When professors (Leibowitz and others) and authors (Beer, Ravikovitz) call Jews Nazis, and when professors (Sternhell and others) call for the Jewish blood to be spilled in the heart of the country; when the government media give wide exposure to terrorist leaders -- how can we complain about the hostility we face in Durban?
