Professors for a Strong Israel
Statement to the Press -

Re:
The suicide festival in Taba
Professors for a Strong Israel
calls upon all who desire true peace to stop the suicide festival
taking place in Taba.
The group sees in ``Operation Shelet'' - Sh'lom ha-Terror (peace for
terrorism) - a danger much more grave than in Operation Sheleg - Sh'lom
ha-Galil (peace for Galilee - the 1982 Lebanon War).
- Sheleg was conceived as an attempt to contend with PLO terror in
the north, with the goal of peace for the Galilee, and gave birth to
a struggle with Palestinian and Islamic terror together.
Shelet was meant to bring peace to PLO terror in the entire country,
but again has brought about a struggle against both arms of the
terrorist pincer: the PLO and Hamas, who share the same goal.
-
Then the slogan was, ``a new order in Lebanon.''
Today's slogan is all the more megalomanic: ``A new Middle East.''
-
Then we learned the hard way that a necessary condition for success
in a planned, large-scale operation is unity among ourselves.
Today, unfortunately, this lesson remains unstudied.
-
Then we saw how rifts in the rear harm the forces at the front.
Today, we see more and more that the process is leading to a
situation where the whole country is a front and the whole nation,
an army.
Despite this terrible development, nothing has been done to prevent
the tear in the nation's fabric, to reinforce the necessary unity.
Our group demands that the Government change the national order of priorities
and concern itself with obtaining wide national consensus - agreement
with the whole of Israel instead of with the whole of the terrorist
PLO.
