Professors for a Strong Israel

Statement to the Press - 12 January 1997

Re: A safe passage?

A booklet recently prepared by the Ministry of the Interior -- Joint Planning for Gaza and Israel - General Survey (October 1996) -- details various consequences of the accelerated and uncoordinated development of the Gaza Strip for life in the State of Israel. Among other things, the booklet discusses the ``safe passage'' routes, the implementation of which will jeopardize the safe passage of Jews on the roads of southern and central Israel. We enclose a partial list of the negative consequences of uncoordinated development in Gaza for environmental quality within the ``Green Line,'' taken from the booklet. Two main lessons may be learned from the booklet:
  1. The pressing need to inform the Israeli public, Israel's policy makers, and the media concerning the totality of the implications of the ``Oslo peace'' for all areas of life in Israel, since a large portion of the support for the Oslo agreements is based on ignorance.
  2. The necessity of certifying coordination between the planning bodies of Israel and of the Palestinians, for the benefit of all residents of the country.
