Professors for a Strong Israel

Statement to the Press - 1 May 2000

Re: Foregone conclusions and shady deals

The head of Israel's negotiating team has announced that the outcome of the talks with the Palestinians will be the establishment of a Palestinian state. The proves that the Government of the Left has given up on peace and turned down the dangerous path of setting up an enemy state at the gates of Jerusalem and Kfar Sava.

The Prime Minister has stated, regarding the bail-out plan for the Shas school system, that there is nothing wrong with renegotiating agreements in order to improve them. Professors for a Strong Israel calls upon the Prime Minister to apply this principle to the fateful and fatal agreement known as the Oslo Accords. Instead of clinging obstinately to an agreement that is leading to war and civil strife, he should stop, consider, and repair the breaches. Instead of handing over the Jerusalem suburbs to terrorist rule he should strengthen the Jewish hold on them and ensure the continuity of the Jewish suburbs, chief among them Ma'aleh Adumim. Peace among the Jews and the fortification of Jerusalem are the repairs that are truly called for.

We condemn the continuing knuckling under to Arafat's blackmail, as well as the readiness to buy off majority support for this surrender. We doubt whether such a purchase can satisfy the standards of sound government; but there is no doubt that surrender to Palestinian blackmail stands in contradiction to common sense and to the security needs of the state.
