Professors for a Strong Israel
Statement to the Press - 22 December 2001
Re: Irrelevant policy
The government's actions following its declaration that Arafat is irrelevant call into question the relevance of its policy. If -
- despite Arafat's media performance, terrorist attacks continue but preventive actions have ceased;
- contrary to the Prime Minister's wishes, Peres' emissaries continue to meet Arafat's;
- government ministers continue to to grant immunity to Arafat and to the Terrorist Authority he leads;
- despite its declaration the government is considering whether the irrelevant man may flaunt his misrule in Bethlehem on Christmas;
then it is the Sharon government that is damaging its own credibility and Israel's deterrence, lending support to the claims of the Oslo architects that Arafat is the boss and that all depends on him.
Professors for a Strong Israel demands of the Prime Minister that he abandon the idea of a Palestinian state west of the Jordan and that he cut off all contact with Arafat.
His alternative is to admit that this zigzag policy really is his policy and that Peres is really following his instructions; then there is no getting away from having new elections as soon as possible.
