Statement to the Press - 22 November 1995

Re: Arutz 7 radio

Taking advantage of the tragic murder of Israeli P.M. Mr. Rabin, some leftist coalition Knesset Members have renewed legislative efforts to silence Radio Channel 7 (Arutz 7) that is viewed as a major voice of the opposition in Israel. Professors for A Strong Israel condemns this attempt to silence this radio that is listened to by nearly 25% of the public.

Because of the monopoly of Israel's National Broadcasting Authority on national radio, Arutz 7 broadcasts from a ship located outside Israel's territorial waters. Since Arutz 7 has broken no laws, special laws are intended to silence it.

While the government has permitted the Palestine Liberation Organization to broadcast within Judea, Samaria, and Gaza, these MK's are working to silence this authentic voice of the Jewish People. Apparently, they recognize freedom of speech for anti-Jewish propaganda, including Arafat's calls for Jihad against Israel, but deny the rights of Jews to express views favoring Jewish values and critical of the current government's policies.

The attempts to close Arutz 7 constitute a further threat to democratic values of free speech, free press, and free access to information from abroad. We call on our brethren in the Diaspora and people concerned for democratic values everywhere to raise their voices against attempts to silence Arutz 7.
