Professors for a Strong Israel

Statement to the Press - 25 December 2002

Re: Whose disgrace? (I)

Professors for a Strong Israel rejects the decision by the Hon. Michael Heshin, chairman of the Central Elections Committee, to invalidate Moshe Feiglin’s candidacy for the Knesset. The decision may be legal, but it is not just. Mr. Feiglin’s actions at the head of Zo Artzenu were a classic example of non-violent civil disobedience, directed at an issue of existential and moral significance of the first order. Other actors in national affairs have used far more violent means, prompted by issues that are merely economic, and have not paid either a personal or a political price. Would Mr. Heshin consider Martin Luther King to be a criminal -- or a courageous fighter for human rights?

We regard this decision as a continuation of the war waged by the Oslo establishment against anyone who has resisted its foolish demarche. We declare that Moshe Feiglin wears a badge of honor, not of disgrace.
