Professors for a Strong Israel

Statement to the Press - 27 September 1999

Re: The Nobel Terror Prize

Giving the Nobel Peace Prize to President Ezer Weizmann would be the presentation of a non-honor for a non-peace.

Why a non-honor? Giving the Prize to arch-terrorist Arafat, who stands even today at the head of a terrorist organization labeled as such by Israeli law, divested the Prize of its value and honor. Moreover, a nomination from Arafat is an insult to a state that once claimed to be in the vanguard of the fight against terrorism.

A non-peace: Since the Prize was awarded to the arch-terrorist and to the Israelis who cut a deal with him, the virtual peace has brought in its wake hundreds of dead and has become a death trap for Israel and its citizens.

Professors for a Strong Israel urges the President to display realism and honesty and to reject outright any chance of receiving this non-prize. On this day that he himself voiced the opinion that courting the Syrian president is a fruitless exercise, it is plainer than ever that peace is still far away. When the Arab world, including Egypt, unites in renewed boycott and incitement -- even against the Government of the Left, for which Mr. Weizmann so improperly campaigned -- peace is still out of reach, and the non-prize is meaningless.
