Professors for a Strong Israel

Statement to the Press - 28 December 1999

Re: Freedom of speech - a casualty of "peace"

Professors for a Strong Israel deplores the police raid on the studios of Arutz 7 radio. The raid was carried out only a few days after the dismissal of Edward Kuznetsov from his post as editor of Vesti, the most widely read Russian-language newspaper. We see here a continuing effort to strike at freedom of expression and to silence dissent, and effort that aims to cripple the Opposition's ability to bring its message before the public. Such actions are appropriate to totalitarian regimes, not to a state that claims to be democratic. We demand that Prime Minister Barak desist immediately from the use of anti-democratic means in his campaign to win the referendum, means by which he will bring about the destruction of democracy, of the nation, and of the country. Peace with the Arabs cannot be bought at the price of division among the Jews. Prime Minister Barak must engage in confidence-building with the Jewish people instead of with the enemy.
