Professors for a Strong Israel
Letter to the Prime Minister - 29 April 2001
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon
The Prime Minister's Office
Jerusalem
Re: The deteriorating security-political
situation
Most honorable Prime Minister Sharon,
We, the members of Professors for
a Strong Israel and the Security Forum for National Strength, did all we
possibly could to replace the government of Barak, in large measure due
to his unreliable security policies. During the election campaign
and after it, you decided upon a policy according to which there are no
negotiations under fire, terror, and violence. We are aghast to observe
that for a long period of time, terror activities are continuing and at
the same time meetings with the heads of the Palestinian Authority - which
has been defined as being responsible for these activities - are taking
place.
We strongly object to your government's
policy towards the Jewish residents of Judea, Samaria, and Gaza. The Jewish
residents of Hebron are subject daily to a real threat to their lives,
the residents of the Gaza strip are subject to mortar and other fire, and
the hands of the Israeli Defense Forces are tied. We demand active ongoing
military moves to alleviate the situation of the Jewish residents of Yesha.
We note that:
- The IDF has lost its power of deterrence.
- Your government is negotiating under
fire.
- Your government is giving in to
international pressure and preventing the IDF from operating.
- Your government is not preventing
citizens such as Dr. Beilin and Rabbi Forman from advising the enemy.
- Your government is doing nothing
to stop the anti-Israel diatribes in the PA media.
- Your government is not trying to
explain its actions to the Arabs who are captive under Arafat's dictatorship.
We demand:
- That you abide by your stated policy
of no negotiations under fire, which means an immediate cessation of all
security and other meetings, whether open or secret, of any type, on behalf
of your government.
- That you direct the IDF to take
the initiative and prevent terror activities anywhere.
- That you declare that Arafat and
his henchmen are terrorists and enemies with all the implications, including
explaining this position internationally.
We wanted to present to you our stand
personally. We also were hoping to discuss with you a number of burning
topics of interest to the national camp, which need immediate attention.
To our chagrin, our request for a meeting was not granted - despite your
promise to keep in personal contact also after the elections - and therefore
we found it appropriate to send you this letter.
Respectfully yours,
Advocate David Hagoel, Brig.
General (res.)
Chairman, the Security Forum |
