Statement to the Press - 29 December 2002
Re: Balance in the media - a demand for oversight
Professors for a Strong Israel has written to the Hon. Mishael Heshin, Chairman of the Central Elections Committee, in order to present data showing biased election coverage in the state-controlled media. The data point clearly at the slanting of facts in reportage and at the favoritism shown by many reporters and interviewers. We demanded that the CEC require the immediate establishment of a public body, with appropriate authority, that will eliminate both the open and hidden skewing of news reporting in the state media until the elections. Alternatively, as was threatened in the case of Arutz 7, the oversight body could suspend further broadcasting until it is assured of the removal of bias. (We note that the CEC's directives to Arutz 7 required immediate compliance.)
