Re: Israel's Government and Israel's capital
Hundreds of members of Professors for a Strong Israel have expressed their alarm at the dangerous policies adopted by the Government of the Left, particularly those regarding Jerusalem.
We have therefore called upon the Hon. Ehud Olmert, Mayor of Jerusalem, to announce publicly that Ehud Barak's deeds and misdeeds are endangering Jerusalem and leading to its partition.
We trust that he will announce this at least as vociferously as he stated during last year's election campaign that Mr. Barak would not divide the city.
In turning to Mr. Olmert we detailed the folly of the Barak government's Jerusalem policy:
- in turning a blind eye to the illegal activity of the Wakf on the Temple Mount, and in concealing the same from the public;
- in the failure to enforce building regulations, among them the Law of Antiquities, in Jerusalem in general and on the Temple Mount in particular;
- in the acceptance of the activity of the Palestinian "security organs" in the city;
- in the acceptance of Palestinian flags and other symbols of sovereignty in the city;
- in the readiness to negotiate the transfer of Jerusalem neighborhoods to Palestinian rule;
- in refusal to allow the erection of a Jewish neighborhood in the Israeli portion of Abu Dis;
- in the inclusion of Route 443 from Modi'in and Ben Shemen to Giv'at Zeev and Jerusalem - the essential alternate route between Israel's two chief cities - in territory that is to pass under Arafat's rule, and
- in the concomitant reversion of Israel's capital to a border city at the end of a narrow corridor, fed by a single lifeline.
