The approaching presidential election
in Israel puts before the Knesset two experienced MK's.
One, Moshe Katzav, is a man of the
National Camp, loyal to the Land of Israel and to Jewish tradition, pleasant in
manner and a seeker of domestic peace, of unity, and of moderation.
The other is Shimon Peres, the man
who pushed Israel into the Oslo trap and who continues pushing it towards the
Oslo War, a man characterized by his Oslo associate as a tireless backstabber,
a candidate of the extreme Left who has worked methodically to delegitimize
half the nation, a man who can stand for perhaps half of Israel's citizens but
much less than half the Jews who live here.
Professors for a Strong Israel
calls on the Members of Knesset to rise above narrow party interests and to
vote for Moshe Katzav, the only candidate of the two who can lessen tensions in
the nation and strengthen its unity. After
seven years with a politically active and quarrelsome president, we cannot
afford to elect a successor whose career has long been characterized by betrayal
and by conspiracy, and who is incapable of seeking consensus. The State deserves a temperate man,
acceptable to a wide spectrum of its citizenry, who will heal the nation's
wounds and return respectability to the institution of the Presidency.
