Professors for a Strong Israel

Statement to the Press - 3 July 1999

Re: Clinton and Beilin

President Clinton's statement in favor of a right of return for Arab refugees is a continuation of his pro-Palestinian policy and of his pressures on Israel. Yossi Beilin's support for Clinton's statement, and other recent statements by Beilin regarding the Palestinian and Lebanese questions, make him unfit to be a member of a Zionist government.

Professors for a Strong Israel condemns Beilin's attack on Defense Minister Arens who said that the understandings that followed the "Grapes of Wrath" operation are worthless. PSI supports Mr. Arens' decision to cancel these understandings.

PSI supports the Prime Minister elect in his response to Clinton, and calls upon him to refrain from including Beilin in his government, since a Palestinian state and a real peace are two opposites. We call upon Mr. Barak to establish a government based on the political center. To yield to the pressures of Yossi Beilin and Yossi Sarid will widen the rifts among the various camps and move the dangerous Oslo Process forward without any checks and balances.
