Professors for a Strong Israel
Statement to the Press - 5 October 2000
Re: High Tide/Low Tide
The code name the Army has chosen for the recent riots - literally translated as High Tide/Low Tide - is astonishingly accurate as a metaphor for the relative strength of the two sides.
- High Tide: The Arabs go from strength to strength, impose on Israel the time and place of each battle, carry the battle to the enemy within the Green Line and within Israel's cities, and manipulate the media in the interest of their struggle.
- Low Tide: Under the leadership of a weak and indecisive Government, as the Ministers of Defense and Police concern themselves with fawning on Arafat when they should be doing their jobs and managing the war, Israel starts the new year on the wrong foot.
It is disgraceful that the Government needs to transport Jews between Jerusalem and Gush Etzion in convoys of armored buses as in 1948;
that it accepts the fact that Gush Segev (in the heart of the Galilee!) is cut off from the rest of Israel for days on end;
that soldiers of the IDF have their hands tied in ways that prevent them from doing their jobs;
that the Government ignores the simple fact that
This is not peace - it is war.
