Professors for a Strong Israel

Statement to the Press - 6 April 2000

Re: The Rule of Law - another casualty of "peace"

The intervention of the High Court of Justice in the early release of Yoram Skolnik is puzzling, to say the least, in light of the frequent release of dangerous terrorist murderers that result from shady deals with Head Murderer Arafat. Professors for a Strong Israel finds it insupportable that the Court refrains from taking a stand on the release of Arab killers on the grounds that political matters are not justiciable, but does intervene when the killer is Jewish. This acquiescence in the early release of Arab murderers is a blow against the supremacy of the Rule of Law.

The Court has also ruled in favor of the Arabs who were evicted from the Army's "firing zone" near Ma'on. The Jews of the place, meanwhile, are evicted again and again. This discrimination cannot be justified under the principles of justice and equality before the law. Similarly, the Arabs engage in virtually unlimited illegal construction, establishment of "facts on the ground," throughout Yesha, in Jerusalem, and in Arab areas within the Green Line. The response of the authorities is to turn a blind eye, while Jewish construction is blocked by a freeze in order to prevent just such an establishment of "facts."

We protest against this continuing erosion of the Rule of Law in Israel, alongside the erosion of Zionist values.
