Statement to the Press - 8 August 1997

Re: Threats against democracy and against legitimate democratic rule

Professors for a Strong Israel deplores the fact that:
  1. the Israel Broadcasting Authority has placed the "national" television network at the disposal of the head of the PLO/Hamas terror organization, so that he can lie to the populace directly instead of to their elected leadership;
  2. the President of the United States has invited the President of Israel to enter upon diplomatic negotiations, ignoring the elected Prime Minister in whose purview such negotiations fall;
  3. opposition Members of the Knesset stand alongside the chief assassin and strengthen his stand against the Government of Israel;
  4. opposition Members of the Knesset call for the "beheading" of the Prime Minister, and for "shooting in all directions."
We hold these phenomena, and many others like them, to constitute threats against democracy and against legitimate democratic rule in Israel, which weaken the national constitution.
