Professors for a Strong Israel

Statement to the Press - 9 December 1995

Re: The terrorist attack near Bethlehem

The Assistant Minister of Defense, Mr. Ori Orr, announced this week in the Knesset that ``if the terror in Shchem and Jenin will continue after the elections in the West Bank, we will perhaps be forced to return there.''

Following the terrorist attack near Bethlehem, Professors for a Strong Israel asks:

  1. If the Government is considering the possibility of reconquest of Shchem and Jenin, why does it persist in handing over cities to the terrorists of the Palestine Liberation Organization?
  2. If the Government is considering the possibility of reconquest of Shchem and Jenin, has it estimated the casualties to be borne in re-establishing Israeli rule in its country?
  3. If the Government is considering the possibility of reconquest of Shchem and Jenin, why does it continue to call the diplomatic process a ``peace process?''
  4. Shouldn't the attack near Bethlehem awaken second thoughts concerning withdrawal from the city?
