Professors for a Strong Israel

Statement to the Press - 9 December 1999

Re: The Golan surrender

Professors for a Strong Israel views Prime Minister Barak's Golan policy as a dangerous and shameful surrender to Syrian demands supported by American pressure. It is a danger to Jewish lives in the Galilee and in the entire country, a weakening of the State, a blow to the values of Zionism and settlement, and a retrograde step in the Zionist vision. If Barak is bent on following in Rabin's footsteps, he should adopt his legacy of security rather than the defeatism he learned from the extreme Left, when he was blinded by the false peace that is leading us to war.

We call on Ariel Sharon, the chairman of the Likud, to create immediately a wide parliamentary and public coalition. This coalition, including the Likud, the National Union, Yisrael Betenu, Yisrael Ba'aliya, the National Religious Party, Shas, and Torah Judaism, must transcend petty considerations in view of the great danger all of us face. Only clear and constant public pressure can prevent the destruction of Israel by the false peace.
