Professors for a Strong Israel

Statement to the Press - 9 May 2001

Re: Another day, another murder

80 years ago this week, Arab rioters murdered 47 Jews, among them the writer Yosef Haim Brenner, in the course of what came to be known as the "incidents" of 1921. In the wake of the riots, Sir Herbert Samuel, the British High Commissioner, decreed a temporary halt to Jewish immigration and its subsequent restriction according to "the numbers and interests of the current population" and the "capacity of absorption" of the country.

The last 24 hours have seen three more Jews murdered in the continuing Oslo War, the well-foreseen consequence of the accords of the same name. Today's "High Commissioner," George Mitchell, calls for freezing the development of Jewish towns in the Jewish homeland, not even allowing for "natural growth." He is joined in this call by elements of the extreme Left who can congratulate themselves on bringing this war about with their policies.

Seen in the broader context, this war has been going on for more than 80 years. Professors for a Strong Israel declares that this long war is not the result of the creation of the state or of the Six Day War, but is a continuing struggle for Jewish existence in the Jewish homeland. We warn the Prime Minister once more against the subversion of Shimon Peres, and call upon him to strike at Arafat's terror apparatus.
